Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about salary transparency laws and compliance.
Critical Compliance Questions
What are the penalties for non-compliance?
Penalties vary by jurisdiction but can be severe:
NYC max penalty
CA per violation
Private right of action
Do these laws apply to remote jobs?
Yes — and this catches most employers off guard.
If you're a Texas company posting a remote job and Colorado residents could apply, Colorado's law applies to you. Same for California, New York, Washington, and 8+ other jurisdictions. Posting "Remote US" means you must comply with the strictest state.
What if my company is small?
Size doesn't protect you in most cases.
- Colorado: All employers, any size
- New York: 4+ employees
- California/Washington: 15+ employees
General Questions
What is salary transparency?
Salary transparency refers to laws requiring employers to disclose compensation information in job postings. These laws aim to reduce pay discrimination.
How many states have these laws?
11+ U.S. states and localities: California, Colorado, New York (state + NYC), Washington, Illinois, Connecticut, Nevada, Maryland, Rhode Island, Hawaii. Ontario, Canada also. More are pending.
What is a "good faith" salary range?
The compensation you genuinely expect to pay. Posting $50,000-$500,000 ranges or ranges you won't honor may violate the law.
Do I need benefits in my posting?
Colorado, Washington, and Illinois require benefits disclosure. Others only require salary. For remote jobs, include benefits to cover all jurisdictions.

Is this tool free to use?
Core compliance checking is free — you can verify your job postings against all 11 jurisdictions at no cost. Exporting compliant disclosures, downloading audit-ready PDF snapshots, and saving to your library are paid features. Most HR teams choose Unlock All ($29 one-time) for full access. No subscriptions.
How accurate is the generated disclosure?
Our tool generates disclosures based on current law requirements as of our last update. However, laws change and may be interpreted differently by courts and regulators. The generated text is a starting point—always have your legal team review important documents. See our disclaimer for full details.
Is my data stored or shared?
Your data stays on your device. This tool runs entirely in your browser—we don't send your job titles, salary ranges, or other inputs to any server. Saved disclosures in the Library are stored locally in your browser's storage. See our Privacy Policy for complete details.
